RICHMOND 鈥 Republicans in the House of Delegates on Sunday chose Del. , R-Gate City, as their new leader.
The chamber鈥檚 prior GOP leader, former Speaker of the House Todd Gilbert, R-Shenandoah, is a candidate to become the next U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia.

The GOP鈥檚 switch for House minority leader comes ahead of crucial November elections for all 100 seats in the House of Delegates, as well as for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. During this year鈥檚 session Democrats held a 51-49 edge in the House of Delegates.

The that Gilbert planned to step down from the post if House Republicans called for a new leadership election.
On Sunday Gilbert tweeted a GIF of Galadriel in 鈥淟ord of the Rings鈥 saying: 鈥淚 will diminish and go into the West.鈥

Sen. Ryan McDougle, R-Hanover, the Senate minority leader, congratulated Kilgore and thanked Gilbert for his service.

Kilgore, a delegate since 1994, served as House majority leader when Gilbert served as House speaker from January 2022 to January 2024. Kilgore is the twin brother of former Del. Jerry Kilgore, the 2005 GOP candidate for governor who lost to Democrat Tim Kaine.
Gilbert, a member of the House since 2006, served as House majority leader from 2018 to 2020 and as minority leader from January 2024 to Sunday.
He is one of to become the next U.S. attorney for the Western District of Virginia. The other is Robert Tracci, senior assistant attorney general and section chief for Major Crimes and Emerging Threats in the Office of the Virginia Attorney General.
