Find out about a project to construct a 20-mile recreational scenic trail along the
former Chesapeake and Ohio Craig Valley Branch railbed between the end of state
maintenance on Route 818 (Craig Valley Drive) near Eagle Rock in Botetourt County
and Craig County High School near New Castle in Craig County.
The multiuse trail for walking, running, biking and horseback riding will mostly consist
of a gravel surface that is anticipated to be approximately 10 feet wide with two-foot
shoulders. It will follow the former railbed and some low-volume secondary roads and
consist of 鈥渟hare the road/trail鈥 sections which will permit the use of motorized
vehicles as well as sections of non-motorized use.
Three new trailheads will be constructed, and six existing bridges along the former
railbed will be modified to accommodate trail use. In addition, two existing box
culverts will be rehabilitated, and two existing box culverts will be replaced.

the form of a Categorical Exclusion at the public hearing or after at VDOT鈥檚 Salem

personnel to answer your questions.
The hearing will be held in an 鈥渙pen-house鈥 format and VDOT representatives will be
present to answer questions. Property impact information, relocation assistance
policies and tentative construction schedules are available for your review at the
above address and will be available at the public hearing. The same information will
be presented on both dates.
In compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act, Section 106 and 36 CFR
Part 800, information concerning the potential effects of the proposed project on
properties listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places is
provided in the environmental documentation.
The comment period for this public hearing is between June 15 and July 26, 2025.
