Veteran photojournalist Matt Gentry took first place for a breaking news photo in the Virginia Press Association news awards announced Saturday in Richmond.
Gentry, who grew up in Blacksburg and has worked in journalism for more than 40 years, was honored for his coverage of Hurricane Helene鈥檚 impact on Claytor Lake.

Gentry also earned a third place for a photo feature, 鈥淛ust Two Kids鈥 from the New River Valley Fair last year and another third place for a personality or portrait photo called 鈥淟ittle Paleontologist.鈥

Metro columnist Dan Casey won second place in column writing. The columns honored focused on the Mountain Valley Pipeline, a laid off worker鈥檚 troubles with the Virginia Employment Commission, and 鈥淭he villainy of Wayne LaPierre, Patrick Henry High鈥檚 most famous grad.鈥
