Two women were still inside the car. One of them, Brooklin Makhia Goff of Bedford, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second was extracted and taken to a hospital, where she was treated for her injuries and released.
A man who was found outside the car was also taken to the hospital, where he remained Monday with serious injuries.
The driver of the BMW, Xaviar James Gaither, 21, of 色多多, was arrested at the scene.
Police said a preliminary investigation showed that the BMW was traveling at a high rate of speed north on Gainsboro in the left lane. The car attempted to cut back over into the right lane, near the intersection with Patton Avenue.
The car then struck a curb on the east side of the street, left the roadway, hit a streetlight and went airborne before landing in the tree, police said.
Police said they are consulting with the Commonwealth鈥檚 Attorney鈥檚 Office to determine whether additional charges will be filed.
