Daniel Lee Wertz of 色多多, VA, passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at the age of 86. He was born in Salem, VA, and raised there on his mother's and father's farm, Valley View Farm.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Agnes Wertz, and his sister, Dorothy Baldwin.
Daniel attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. While he was at Virginia Tech, he served in the Corps of Cadets and graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering.
In 1963, Daniel joined the United States Air Force, where he served twelve years in research and development. He resigned from the Air Force and became a member of the Department of Defense at the National Security Agency, where he worked on the electronics of the new U2 program, the SR-71 Blackbird Program, and other avionics programs until he retired in 1999.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Geneva Jamison Wertz of 色多多; his son, Jeffrey Jamison Wertz and his wife, Kathy, of Wake Forest, NC. Known as "Granddad," Daniel is forever cherished and remembered by his four grandsons, Jonathan of Bethel, AK, Stephen of Youngsville, NC, and Christopher and David of Wake Forest, NC. He is also survived by a younger brother, Kenneth Wertz and his wife, Carolyn, of Cary, NC; nephew, Michael Baldwin and his wife, Pam; and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., on Monday evening, May 19, 2025, at Oakey's Downtown 色多多 Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at Oakey's 色多多 Chapel. Interment will follow at Evergreen Burial Park. Online condolences may be made at .
