BLACKSBURG 鈥 Virginia Tech concluded its 15 spring practices on April 12 with its annual spring game. The spring transfer portal window opened four days later and will remain open for 10 days until April 25.
This page will serve as a tracker portal tracker with notes on the players entering the portal and updates on players who are planning on joining the Hokies.
Who is joining the Hokies
Caleb Brown, CB: The Hokies filled a need in the secondary by bringing in a veteran cornerback in Brown. The 6-foot-1, 160-pound Brown spent the last two seasons at Hawaii after spending 2022 at Butler Community College and two seasons at Kennesaw State. He didn鈥檛 have an interception during his two seasons with the Warriors, but he did have five interceptions in his one season with Butler Community College. Brown has one season of eligibility remaining. (April 26)

Kody Huisman, DT: Huisman became the first addition from the spring transfer portal window when he announced he was transferring to the Hokies eight days into the 10-day window. Huisman thrived during his three seasons on the field at North Dakota State and got plenty of game experience with the Bison playing for the FCS title in 2022, advancing to the semifinal round in 2023 and winning the title in 2024. He broke into the starting rotation last season and posted career highs of 37 tackles and 7.5 tackles for a loss, and he also blocked two kicks during the title-winning campaign. Here is who is leaving
Bob Schick, OG: Schick鈥檚 agents with 3 Strand Sports & Entertainment told 247Sports and On3 that he is entering the transfer portal to play his sixth season of eligibility at another school. Schick started 10 games at left guard last season after starting in 13 games at right guard in 2023. He spent four seasons with the Hokies after spending one season at Snow College. Schick鈥檚 departure means the Hokies will have to replace every offensive lineman who started more than three games last season. (April 22)

Connor McLaughlin, K/P: The walk-on specialist is entering the transfer portal, according to a report from 247Sports. McLaughlin spent one season with the Hokies and was a backup kicker. He did not attempt an extra point or kickoff in the spring game, with John Love, Kyle Lowe and Aidan Daugherty handling those duties. Cam Fleming, LB/S: Fleming announced on that he is entering the transfer portal. He spent two seasons with the Hokies and gradually moved closer to the line of scrimmage each season. He arrived on campus as a cornerback, transitioned to safety, moved down to Star linebacker and eventually shifted to inside linebacker. Fleming got on the field for four games in 2024 against Miami, Stanford, Georgia Tech and Syracuse. He played 11 snaps against the Cardinal when he registered his only two tackles with the Hokies. Fleming has three seasons of eligibility remaining. (April 21)
Braylon Johnson, DB: Johnson played both cornerback and safety with the Hokies. The Highland Springs High School product spent his freshman season in 2023 as the backup field cornerback behind Dorian Strong and played in every game, and he was moved to safety in 2024. He played in four games this past season and redshirted, which means he has three years of eligibility remaining. Johnson, the son of former Virginia Tech defensive back Loren Johnson, spent the spring as the sixth safety on the depth chart behind Quentin Reddish and four transfers (Tyson Flowers, Christian Ellis, Sherrod Covil and Isaiah Cash). After much prayer and discussion with my family, I鈥檝e decided it will be best for me at this time to enter into the NCAA transfer portal with one years of eligibility remaining. Thank you to my teammates and my coaches for everything. Blacksburg will always be home, Go Hokies馃鈥硷笍

Caleb Nitta, C: Nitta spent two seasons with the Hokies as a walk-on. He actually started and played every snap at center in the Duke鈥檚 Mayo Bowl, then split time at center and guard during the spring. He played both center and guard during the spring game. West Virginia transfer Kyle Altuner is the frontrunner to be the starting center, and Tommy Ricard likely has the second-string center spot locked up, which meant Nitta would serve as third-string center for the upcoming season. He also appeared in games against Old Dominion and Boston College last season. (April 16)
