Chris Dowdy, the longtime head coach of the Patrick Henry High School boys soccer team, was a nominee for the B鈥檔ai B鈥檙ith awards when he was a senior at William Byrd High School.
His son took it one step further.
At the 74th installment of the awards banquet Monday night at Hotel 色多多, Sam Dowdy was named the 2025 recipient out of Patrick Henry, with his father in attendance.
鈥淗e鈥檚 like, 鈥楾his is something I never got,鈥 so I got one up on him I guess,鈥 Sam Dowdy said of his dad, chuckling. 鈥淚t鈥檚 definitely a cool experience. I just kind of came as a day, a dinner to be at really. Wasn鈥檛 expecting anything of it really, it鈥檚 just really cool to win.鈥

The recognition caps off a prolific high school tenure for Sam Dowdy, who not only excelled at three sports at PH but was recruited for the collegiate level at all three, eventually choosing to compete for VMI soccer over football and golf.
His community service includes hours spent with VA United Soccer Club, Habitat for Humanity, Rescue Mission, LEAP Kitchen and as an RCPS soccer counselor.
He is the first honoree from Patrick Henry since James Beasley in 2022.
鈥淚t鈥檚 definitely what you work for,鈥 he said of receiving the award. 鈥淓very practice, every coach, every teammate has really just helped in that journey to get here. It鈥檚 nice to get recognition not just for athletics or not just for academics, it鈥檚 as a person as a whole really, and that really shows from your family, from your upbringing and just the routine every day.鈥
Sam Dowdy wasn鈥檛 the only nominee from Patrick Henry to be recognized as Grace Williams, the female nominee for the overall award, was named the recipient of the Artie Levin Personal Life Award.
鈥淚鈥檓 just honored at the overall outcome of it,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 was clueless, and it was just such a good feeling knowing I did something.鈥
