RICHMOND 鈥 President Donald Trump has nominated , to serve as a deputy U.S. trade representative.
In the post, which requires U.S. Senate confirmation, Goettman鈥檚 areas of responsibility would include Africa, the Western Hemisphere, Europe, the Middle East, environment, labor and industrial competitiveness.
During the first Trump administration Goettman served as , which helps finance U.S. international trade.
In 2019, he served as a counselor for domestic finance in the U.S. Department of the Treasury. In that job, he helped launch the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act鈥檚 $80 billion program for airlines.
In June 2024, Goettman stepped down from his top post in the Youngkin administration. Goettman, a close friend of Youngkin鈥檚 who helped guide his ascent to the governor鈥檚 office, said he decided to leave his position after a health issue, since resolved, that coincided with the birth of his first grandchild.
The governor praised Goettman at the time, saying in a written statement: 鈥淚t鈥檚 not an exaggeration to say that there was no one more important in our election and Administration than Jeff Goettman.鈥
As Youngkin鈥檚 chief of staff Goettman sometimes had a strained relationship with state lawmakers, as when a delegation of for how to use the newly restored Old City Hall, a 19th century historic landmark that faces Capitol Square.
In January, Democrats in the state Senate refused to confirm Youngkin鈥檚 nomination of Goettman to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. Goettman was among a dozen Youngkin picks Democrats rejected during the General Assembly session.
Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell, D-Fairfax, said at the time: 鈥淚t鈥檚 the prerogative of this body to reject people if we don鈥檛 think they鈥檙e the right people. That鈥檚 what鈥檚 happening.鈥
