A victory in the 4x400-meter relay (4 minutes, 15.81 seconds) helped the Floyd County girls capture a share of the Class 2 indoor track and field state championship Thursday at Liberty University in Lynchburg.
The Buffaloes finished with 63 points, ending up tied with Lee. The teams were named co-champions. Glenvar placed sixth (36), James River came in 14th (16) and Patrick County finished 15th.
On the boys side, Floyd County finished third, 29 points shy of champion Bruton. Floyd鈥檚 Quinlan Beegle won the 1,000 (2:33.73) and teammate Mason Erchull won the 3,200 (9:48.23).
Other local winners include Radford鈥檚 Essiq Williams in the 300 (36.07), Glenvar鈥檚 Tyson Hobbs in the triple jump (44 feet, 5 inches), Liberty鈥檚 Keondre Dawson in the 500 (1:06.80) and the Minutemen鈥檚 4x400 relay (3:34.29).
Despite not winning an individual championship, Auburn earned enough second-place and third-place finishes to capture the Class 1 girls indoor track and field state championship Thursday at Liberty University in Lynchburg.
The Eagles tallied four runner-up and three third-place performances, finishing with 91 points and beating Brunswick by 13 to claim the title.
Local athletes who won individual state championships include Eastern Montgomery鈥檚 Aija McHone in the 500 (1:21.73), George Wythe鈥檚 Emma Faulkner in the 1,000 (3:22.01), Giles鈥 Annaliese Miller in the 1,600 (5:37.44), Parry McCluer鈥檚 Kamilah Richardson in the shot put (38 feet, 2.25 inches) and Chilhowie鈥檚 4x800 relay (13:04.17).
On the boys side, Rural Retreat won four events and finished fourth with 66.5 points, 15.5 points shy of Lancaster. Trey Ward won the 55 (6.62) and 300 (35.82), while Hunter Vaught won the long jump (21 feet, 2.25 inches) and triple jump (42 feet, 8.75 inches).
Auburn finished third with 71.5 points. Drew Royal won the high jump (6 feet, 4 inches), and Talan Mower won the pole vault (12 feet, 6 inches).
Parry McCluer鈥檚 Kebryl Chandler won the 1,000 (2:33.48) and 1,600 (4:32.54).
