Plans for a high-end boutique hotel on Crystal Spring Avenue in south 色多多 have been shelved for now, nearly three years after approval from the city's board of zoning appeals.
Developer Rudy Van Thiel's limited liability company won 6-0 approval in August 2022 for a 21-room, four-story glass and brick hotel and restaurant. Belle LY LLC had purchased the combined two lots in preceding years.

Afterward, in preparation for the redevelopment project, contractors demolished a former Famous Anthony's restaurant and another structure on the site at 2221-2223 Crystal Spring Ave. S.W. It has been surrounded by a construction fence since.

On Thursday, a spokeswoman for Van Thiel said he has decided not to move forward with the project, citing increased construction costs since the project was initially planned in 2021. In April 2024, Van Thiel had told The 色多多 that rising interest rates and banks' reticence to issue loans for hospitality projects also had slowed the development.
The change "doesn't mean it's not going to happen, just not now," Krista Vannoy, vice president and chief operating officer with Waldvogel Commerical Properties, said Thursday.
Vannoy said grading at the site will be completed, and it will be cleared and reseeded, while appropriate fencing will be added to create a green space amid the commercial district.
