The Virginia Tech men鈥檚 basketball program has added another recruit.
Point guard Brett Freeman of Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, has committed to the Hokies.
Freeman, who will be graduating next month, said Wednesday in a phone interview that he visited Virginia Tech on Tuesday and committed that same day. He announced his commitment on Twitter on Tuesday night.
鈥淭he coaching staff was very welcoming to me,鈥 he said Wednesday. 鈥淚t was a great opportunity for me to be a better player.
鈥淭hey loved my game. It was kind of a no-brainer. 鈥 To be able to have the opportunity to play at the highest level, that鈥檚 an honor.鈥
The 6-foot-5, 185-pound Freeman averaged 24.2 points, 3.6 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.2 steals as a senior this school year. He made 52 3-pointers in 25 games. He scored a school-record 604 points on the season.

Freeman scored 49 points in one game and 43 in another. He scored more than 30 points in three other games.
鈥淗e鈥檚 a prolific scorer,鈥 Ardrey Kell coach Mike Craft said Wednesday in a phone interview. 鈥淗e can shoot the 3, he can hit a step-back 3, he can take it to the hole, he can get a mid-range (shot). 鈥 He can play the point 鈥 or he can play on the wing if they need him to. He鈥檚 a scoring point guard, but he can pass the ball.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a dream come true for him, and he鈥檒l get up there and work.鈥
Freeman made The Charlotte Observer鈥檚 All-Metro second team last month. He was his conference鈥檚 player of the year.
鈥淚鈥檓 a great decision-maker,鈥 Freeman said. 鈥淚 can score at three levels. 鈥 I take what the defense gives me. 鈥 I just always find what鈥檚 open and I get to the right spot, or maybe that鈥檚 a pass.鈥
In January, Freeman was named a finalist for The Charlotte Observer鈥檚 North Carolina 鈥淢r. Basketball鈥 award. The honor wound up going to North Carolina State recruit Zymicah Wilkins.
鈥淗e鈥檚 got to get on the weights and get stronger for the ACC,鈥 Craft said of Freeman.
Freeman received a scholarship offer from Florida State in early February. But that was when Leonard Hamilton was the FSU coach. Hamilton announced in early February that he would be stepping down at the end of the season.
鈥淲ith Florida State, it was (a question of) who was going to get the job,鈥 Craft said. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 know that had he pulled the trigger (back then on the FSU offer) that would鈥檝e been the right move.鈥
Freeman said he never spoke to Hamilton鈥檚 successor, Luke Loucks.
Freeman also received an offer in February from Conference USA member Florida International.
鈥淗is dad and Brett were very patient and they waited for the right school to come along,鈥 Craft said. 鈥(Tech) is just a great fit.鈥
Craft said Drake also wanted Freeman.
Freeman said Tennessee had also been in contact with him, although Tennessee had not made an offer.
Freeman averaged 15.8 points, 2.3 assists and 4.0 rebounds as a junior. He sank 45 3-pointers in 22 games.
He becomes the fourth high school senior in the 2025 graduating class to commit to the Hokies. Christian Gurdak and Sin鈥機ere Jones signed last fall, while Solomon Davis committed to Tech earlier this month.
The addition of Freeman gives the Hokies 12 scholarship players for next season鈥檚 roster, including Tobi Lawal, who entered the NBA Draft while maintaining his college eligibility. Lawal has until May 28 to withdraw from the draft and keep his college eligibility.
Lawal is one of four returning scholarship players, along with Tyler Johnson, Ben Hammond and Jaden Schutt.
Tech coach Mike Young added three players from the transfer portal last month 鈥 former West Virginia forward Amani Hansberry, former Delaware point guard Izaiah Pasha and ex-UNLV guard Jailen Bedford.
Young also added Antonio Dorn, a 21-year-old center from Germany, last month.
