The Copper Cove Golf Club in Hardy remains open following a fire early Friday morning that destroyed a golf cart storage building and was minutes away from reaching the main clubhouse.
The building was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene before dawn Friday following reports of a fire.
鈥淚t was nothing short of amazing the way they responded,鈥 said Tara McBride, wife of Billy McBride, who is one of the club鈥檚 owners.
Firefighters were able to control the fire and prevent it from reaching other buildings. The golf cart storage building was destroyed along with the 52 golf carts inside, as well as the pool bathroom and pump room.
The clubhouse sustained only minor damage, with much of that being cosmetic damage to the exterior. McBride said firefighters informed them that the blaze was only minutes away from reaching the clubhouse when they responded.
McBride said the cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but investigators have informed them there was nothing suspicious found. Investigators have also cleared the scene and allowed them to begin cleanup.
Copper Cove has remained operational since the fire. McBride said the grill is still open for customers and golfers can still come out and play while walking the course. New golf carts are expected to arrive as early as Wednesday, she added.
鈥淲e are still open for walkers, food and events,鈥 McBride said.
The club鈥檚 pool traditionally opens on the Saturday before Memorial Day. McBride said the opening date would have to be delayed to allow for cleanup.
鈥淚t won鈥檛 be open this Saturday unfortunately, but we will open as soon as possible,鈥 McBride said.
The golf club was fully insured and will be rebuilding, restoring and replacing everything that was lost in the fire. McBride said their goal is to get everything back running at 100%.
Despite the difficulty of the last few days, McBride thanked the community for its support following the fire.
鈥淭he support of the community has been great,鈥 McBride said. 鈥淲e really appreciate that.鈥
As work is being done to get the club back to fully operational, McBride encouraged people to check the club website at or Facebook page for updates. They can also contact the club at 540-721-4214.
